My name is Tom Hayes and I am a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). I have been practicing for almost 15 years, 12 of them in Illinois before relocating to southern California, getting Licensed and practicing here for the past 3 years. I like to believe that at some point in our lives, we all need help or maybe a different perspective and therapy can be the answer for many folks. Yes going to therapy can be initially sort of scary and confusing to some but it can also be very comforting and rewarding to most people.
The therapeutic relationship is critical for change to begin and may require some effort on your part to find the right psychotherapist, to find that comfort level which is helpful to you. You may be in a position that medication is warranted but along with medication, therapy is always equally important, if not more so. Psychotherapy can and will help most people with a commitment from both the therapist and client! I am non-judgmental, willing to look at situations from a client's perspective (empathy), identifying with clients potential solutions that were never considered or one simply didn't know where to begin. I use many of the acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) techniques which are essentially focused on accepting yourself as an individual human being with positive and negative characteristics, making a strong commitment to yourself to address whatever is causing you distress and then taking the appropriate action to change.
